Using less energy and being greener at home are easier than you think

  • Households could save up to £25 a month and 1.5 tonnes of CO2 a year just by being energy efficient.
  • If you find that you’re digging deeper in your pocket every month to heat your home and generate hot water, a decent boiler could be the answer.
  • According to the Energy Savings Trust, an average UK household creates around 5.5 tonnes of CO2 a year, nearly double the emissions of an average car.
  • Cars are taking too much flak for CO2 emissions explains Kevin Surace, CEO of Serious Materials, as he paces the stage at the 2009 TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) Conference. He believes that the buildings in which we live and work are the real villains in our war on CO2 – a battle the American entrepreneur has labelled the “third industrial revolution”.
  • The Netherlands has one of the highest recycling rates in the EU. In 2007, it recycled 6.6 million tonnes of its total 10.2 million tonnes of waste.
