What you can do

It could be organising an event, making simple changes around the home or trying new ways to travel: find lots of ideas for making a difference right here.

Get Motivated

Home, Travel and Food make up more than 60% of the average UK resident's carbon footprint. Here are some ideas to help change that.

Heroes wanted

We’re looking for 12 green heroes to inspire Team Green Britain members to start living a more low-carbon life. In return, we’ll give you exclusive access to London 2012 events, and the chance to try out some of our most exciting carbon-saving products and services, so you can become even greener. The most inspirational hero, as judged by our members, will win £10,000 to support a sustainability project in their community.

Your chance to be a hero

We know loads of people are already trying to live more sustainable lives, and have taken small and large steps to make their lives that bit more low-carbon.

And now we're looking for 12 special people, who can show everyone else in Team Green Britain just how much you can do to live more sustainably when you put your mind to it. Because we know it's easier to change your life when you can see how someone else has done it.

Don't worry if you think what you're doing isn't inspirational enough. It's not about spending loads on the latest eco-tech or never flying again. We're looking for team members who are willing to share their experiences, on their journey to living more sustainably.

What our heroes will get

Our heroes will get to try out some of our products and services, designed to help them live even more sustainably, potentially including a trial of one of the following*:

  • Renewable energy technology, so you can make your own power at home
  • A green runabout in the form of the latest model of electric car
  • Smart meters, so you can see how much energy your appliances use

Our heroes will also get exclusive access to London 2012 events and one or more of the following products and services:

  • A green spring clean: a full audit of how you use energy at home
  • Innovative products from EDF Energy's Energy Shop, so you can trim your energy bills even more
  • An EcoManager: EDF Energy's wireless appliance controller worth £69.99 to help you take more control of your energy use at home.

How to become a hero

All you have to do is complete the form, telling us about your life and how sustainable it is. The more detail you can give us, the better, so please read our guidelines for full details on what we're looking for (have what you want to say ready, as you won't be able to save the form and come back to it later.) Then our panel of green experts from EDF Energy and our London 2012 ambassadors will pick the 12 most inspiring people to become our green heroes.

We'll ask the 12 to blog, tweet and write about living with the eco-kit they get from us, so the rest of the Team can find out more about what a lower-carbon lifestyle is like. Then next year, to coincide with the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, Team Green Britain members will get to vote for the hero who has inspired them the most. And our 2012 hero will win £10,000 to help with a sustainability project in their community. Plus get to meet our London 2012 ambassadors.
